Milk Chocolate Ingredients
Having gone over the ingredients of Dark Chocolate, it’s fairly simple to say that Milk Chocolate is Dark Chocolate with milk added! However, is there anything else added to chocolate to make it into milk chocolate? Is it as simple as just adding milk, or are other ingredients also added to make our milk chocolate popular?
The government of the United States of America requires a concentration of 10% of chocolate liquor in milk chocolate, and 12% milk solids. The EU regulations require 25% of cocoa solids in milk chocolate. In the 1800s Henri Nestlé invented milk chocolate, and he used condensed milk in order to sweeten the chocolate and make it a little more smooth on the palate.
In addition to these requirements companies can add any other ingredients to their chocolate. Including fillers and more sugars to make the chocolate sweet.
Milk chocolate is not as healthy as dark chocolate. Dark chocolate contains the flavonol antioxidants that dark chocolate contains. The more diluted the chocolate gets with various ingredients, the lower the number of antioxidants it has. So if you are concerned about dark chocolate and health, stick with the darker chocolate!
