Chocolate Antioxidants
We hear a lot in the news today about antioxidants and how good they are for us. Antioxidants are substances we find in our food that can slow or prevent the damage to our bodies caused by oxidation. The cells in our bodies use oxygen, and a by-product of this processes is that the cells produce free radicals, and these cause damage. To fight the free radicals, we need to consume antioxidants which can repair and prevent the damage done by the free radicals. So how does this help us in our search for chocolate health?
Chocolate is loaded with the antioxidants that can repair and protect our cells. Even milk chocolate contains antioxidants. In a 1.4 ounce piece of milk chocolate you can find about 400 milligrams of antioxidants. This is about as much as a glass of red wine. Dark chocolate has even more antioxidants, about twice as much. White chocolate, however, has no antioxidants.
Again we have to stress that, in addition to chocolate’s good properties, it does still contain a great deal of fat and sugar. So if you eat a lot of it, you can still gain a lot of pounds! However, chocolate is not necessarily a major cause of obesity. The Swiss tend to eat about twice as much chocolate than Americans. As much as 22 pounds a year. but they also have one of the lowest obesity rates.
